Types of Number Plates in Saudi Arabia

In Saudi Arabia, there are four types of number plates for vehicles. Depending on the purpose or nature of the plate, it can be used to identify a private citizen, a public service vehicle, commercial transport, or a diplomatic vehicle.

There are six distinct types of driving licenses, each of which serves a different purpose. The most common type is a private driving license, which allows an individual to operate a motor vehicle.

In the event of a damaged or stolen plate, replacing a vehicle’s number plate is a necessary process that must be done. Without the proper registration and identification, any motor vehicle on the road would be deemed illegal and could result in severe repercussions for both the owners and drivers.

The Saudi Arabian number plates come in 4 different colours: white, blue, yellow, and green. The backdrop of all plates is white.

White Number Plates (Private Cars)

Saudi Arabia’s most common number plate is a white one, which is assigned to private cars. The use of private cars for transportation and other commercial purposes is not allowed. It has a circle at the bottom as its symbol.

Yellow Number Plates (Public Transport)

Yellow stripes appear on public transport and taxi license plates. A triangle pointing upward is displayed at the bottom of the strip.

These number plates are also found on cars owned by private transportation companies such as Uber and Careem. Transport of goods in Saudi Arabia is only authorized with vehicles with yellow number plates.

Blue Number Plates (Commercial)

Vehicles marked in blue are commercial vehicles like trucks, pickups, and other heavy mobile equipment. A triangle points down at the bottom of the strip.

Green Number Plates (Diplomatic)

There are fewer green number plates in Saudi Arabia than any other kind of plate. The sticker represents the fact that the vehicle is registered to a consulate or embassy. There is a white rectangle surrounding the Saudi coat of arms. It is not accompanied by any symbols.

Banned Number Plates

The Arabic and Latin translations of some letter combinations are banned. It includes ” ‘S’ ‘E’ ‘X’ “, ” ‘A’ ‘S’ ‘S’ “, and others.

Contents of a Saudi License Plate

The plates include three letters and up to four digits in Arabic. The standard plates always contain four numbers, which are padded with zeroes if necessary. The number on a personalized plate or earlier registration can contain one, two or three numbers, with or without zero padding. While letter translations are done from left to right in the Latin alphabet, Arabic letters are read from right to left. When you apply online, you have to decide whether you want to pick it up from the nearest branch or have it delivered. You can also have it delivered internationally. If you choose to pick it up, you have to choose a branch that is nearby, while if you choose home delivery, you must specify the address.

Important Information

• You have only one year to use the International Driving Permit once it is issued, no matter if you use it or not.
• IDP is a translation of the National Driving Permit. You must have both an IDP and Saudi driving license if you intend to drive outside of Saudi Arabia. You must provide both when asked by foreign authorities.
• IDPs that are damaged or lost cannot be reprinted.  If an IDP is requested and fees are paid, a new one will be issued.
• Renting a vehicle abroad is possible with the International Driving Permit. The International Driving Permit is accepted by rental car companies abroad. You can also drive a vehicle belonging to a first-degree relative overseas or your own vehicle.

Qatar

Additionally, Qatar is one country that accepts Saudi Arabian driving licenses. A Saudi driving license is required to drive in Qatar, and this option is available to Saudis and expatriates alike.

United Arab Emirates

In the UAE, people who have valid Saudi driving license are allowed to drive their cars. You have likely seen Saudi number plates on many cars when you visited the UAE. The Saudi driving license can also be used for obtaining an Emirates driving license.

It implies that you are allowed to drive in Dubai if you have a valid Saudi driving license.

Austria

Yes, the Saudi Arabia driving license is valid in the USA. You will need to meet certain requirements. One of the requirements is that the driver’s license is issued in English. Names, digits, and symbols must be in English and easily readable. Using translation services, your driving license can be translated from your local language to English. 

In addition, visitors with foreign licenses can drive for up to three months. According to official records, this is from the date you entered the United States.  You must obtain an IDP to continue driving. The United States, however, does not issue IDP to short-term visitors. It must be obtained from your home country.  

Is Saudi Arabia’s driving license valid in Canada?

Requirements to Renew Saudi Driving License

These are the requirements for the renewal of a Saudi driving license.

• Applicant should have fingerprint and photo in Asbher individual account.
• Payment of renewal or delay fee. If any.
• Payment of all traffic violations. If any.
• The existing driving license should be valid for less than 180 days.
• The applicant should be alive.

Procedure to Renew Driving Licence

• Login to your Asbher account.
• From My Services select Services.
• Next Select Traffic.
• After that click on Renew Driving License.
• Hit the Next button and now we are about to renew the license.
• Select your license type.
• Select the license renewal period. (It depends on how much you have paid. Example: If you have paid for 5 years select 5)
• After choosing both the options click on the Next button.
• On the next page, you will be able to see all the details. Your personal information with a new expiry date.
• Read the terms and conditions and then accept these terms and conditions.
• Click on the Confirm button.
• That is all your driving license has been renewed successfully.

Collect Renewed Driving License.

You have 7 days to collect your driving license from Muroor. If you fail to collect your driving license in 7 days then you have to pay an extra 100 Saudi Riyals.

You can select the home delivery option as well. You have to select your Saudi national address. This service will cost you 15 Saudi Riyals.

Saudi Driving License Renewal Fee.
